Trees and shrubs are starting to bud with a week’s worth of warm temps across Georgia

ATLANTA — With a week’s worth of 70+ degree weather, the warm temps are having an effect on our trees and bushes.

“We typically don’t see temperatures of 75 degrees or better until later February,” Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

On Tuesday, the Atlanta metro made it up to a high of 77 degrees, one degree shy of breaking a record.

With the warm weather, we could start to see early leafing in parts of North Georgia.

“Our trees and shrubs are starting to respond to the weather, so we’re starting to see a little bit more leafing up into Georgia,” Deon said.

Our temperatures have been 10-20 degrees above normal. But that is going to change next week.

Temperatures are expected to return to normal winter levels which means that could damage some of the new growth that is popping right now.

We are still in the season where we can see a deep freeze, but luckily, any damage caused to trees and shrubs will be able to be pruned off.

“You don’t want to get too excited about the warm weather and start planting. You’ll want to hold off until that last frost, which is typically not until April 15,” Deon said.
