WASHINGTON — By a wide margin, U.S. Representative for Georgia Doug Collins was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the next United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Collins was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the VA Secretary on Nov. 14, 2024.
A veteran himself, Collins is a current member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve and previously served as an Air Force Chaplain. Collins enlisted in the military in 2002.
His political career began in 2007 when he served multiple terms in the Georgia General Assembly before winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives and taking federal office in 2013.

During the various confirmation hearings Collins attended ahead of the confirmation vote, he pledged that the Department of Veterans Affairs would be his mission, focusing on ensuring healthcare for veterans and making “sure they get the benefits that they deserve.”
“[The] VA will not have a stronger fighter for the employees in the workforce than this Secretary, if confirmed, and also one that will make sure that we’re held accountable,” Collins said previously.
In the Senate, Collins won confirmation by a vote of 77 to 23, though it was not an official tally. After the vote, the U.S. Senate entered a recess until 2:15 p.m.
