Volunteers spend Saturday helping Atlanta school ahead of MLK Day of Service

ATLANTA — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., dozens of volunteers spent their Saturday as a day of service to help out an Atlanta school.

More than 100 people volunteered their time at M. Agnes Jones Elementary in Southwest Atlanta.

They worked on a mural, made snack packs for students, and helped organize classrooms for teachers.

The principal said it sends a positive message to students.

“There’s people around them in this community and even people who aren’t in this community who want to see them not only survive but thrive. Really be excited about learning but also know there is a way for them to give back to their community and pay it forward,” Principal Teruko Dobashi said.

The volunteers represented Westside Future Fund, KPMG, and other community partners.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be busy across metro Atlanta.

Some of the events planned for Monday include a commemorative service at Ebenezer Baptist Church starting at 9 a.m. and the MLK 5K Drum Run at the First Baptist Church in Doraville.
