Water back on after main break outside busy Atlanta shopping center

ATLANTA — Businesses in a very busy shopping mall had to shut down because of a water main break.

Some customers were surprised when they went to get coffee and the doors were locked at Starbucks at Ansley Mall on Monroe Drive.

“I wanted Starbucks, and I was so disappointed. There’s a sign on the door saying we’re not open,” customer Charles Hacker told Channel 2’s Tom Jones.

Starbucks wasn’t the only store closed for business Friday morning.

Hacker had no idea why the store was closed until he learned from Jones about the water main break.

“I had no idea why that street was closed up there. Another water main break in Atlanta. What can I say?” Hacker said.

Atlanta Watershed Management shut down Monroe Road from Piedmont Avenue to the Ansley Mall entrance.

They had to shut off the water and dig a hole into the road to repair the break.

“Well, what if my water bottle runs out of water? How am I going to refill it,” Hair Stylist Neka Singleton said, thinking about how difficult it is for her business not having water.

She said she was preparing to shampoo her first customer of the day.

“When he sat down, I turned the water on. I’m like wait,” she said.

There was no water. She had to use bottled water to get the job done.

Other businesses, like Starbucks, shut down because they couldn’t operate without water.

Around 1 p.m., a watershed worker said crews repaired the water main and the water was back on.

Singleton wanted to see for herself. She went to her sink and turned on the water.

“Yeah, it’s working now. So now I can shampoo the people hair in peace,” she said.

Jones saw crews cover up the hole in Monroe Road, but they still had the road blocked off by 6 p.m. Friday.

The road was reopened by 9 p.m.
