ATLANTA — Zoo Atlanta announced a new big-eared resident was coming to their African Savanna thanks to a new transfer from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kan.
According to zoo officials, Titan, a 16-year-old adult male African elephant, arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Titan, who the zoo says weighs more than 8,000 pounds, was born in Eswatini, an African nation near Mozambique. He and several other elephants were brought to the United States in 2016 as part of a multi-organizational rescue effort to save elephants impacted by drought conditions in the region.

Zoo Atlanta said that Titan learned important social skills while spending his juvenile years among a herd of females and bull elephants at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
“We are very excited to welcome Titan to the elephant herd at Zoo Atlanta, where he will benefit from the daily stewardship of a world-class Elephant Care Team and an environment that represents the most significant transformation in Zoo Atlanta history,” Raymond B. King, President and CEO, said in a statement. “Our hope is that in getting to know Titan as he becomes a new part of the herd here at the Zoo, our Members and guests will have renewed reasons to join us in protecting African elephants, which have a very uncertain future without conservation action.”
For the next few weeks, Titan will be adjusting to his new home, which was designed for elephants’ wellbeing. The African Savanna at Zoo Atlanta was opened in 2019 to accommodate what the zoo said was up to seven adult elephants, including three large water features, a feeder enrichment activity wall and three swing boom enrichment devices to encourage foraging with their trunks.
Additionally, Zoo Atlanta said the Zambezi Elephant Center has elements for elephant wellbeing, including sand under their feet and a large observation area for Zoo visitors.
