Griner has played her entire WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury since the team drafted the center No. 1 overall in the 2013 WNBA Draft. Griner decided to test the free agent waters and agreed to a one-year deal with Atlanta.
“Free agency has been everything I wanted it to be, honestly. I was able to find where I wanted to go,” Griner said. “Honestly, what led me to that decision ultimately was the team, the players as individuals. Also my family. I’m thrilled for this chapter.”
Griner said it was a hard decision, but she looks forward to a “rebrand” for her career.
Griner’s signing marks another milestone for the Dream this offseason. The franchise announced season tickets for 2025 are officially sold out. Griner and the Dream will open the season May 16 against the Washington Mystics.
