CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Many of you may be traveling through the area of Ball Ground Highway and East Cherokee Drive between Canton and Ball Ground in Cherokee County.
If you have noticed smoke in the air, this is due to an ongoing fire at Cowart Mulch, according to Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services.
“The fire is primarily burning raw wood and brush, and our crews, in partnership with facility staff, have successfully been working to reduce the risk of fire spread to structures and equipment on site and beyond,” fire officials say.

Officials say because of current weather conditions, smoke from the fire is settling between Canton and Ball Ground. When traveling through these areas, motorists are asked to slow down, turn on headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
If you have any pre-existing conditions affecting your respiratory system, you’re encouraged to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut.

If possible, use an air purifier to improve indoor air quality. If leaving the house is necessary, wearing an N95 mask can help minimize exposure to smoke.
It is unclear when the fire will be completely extinguished.
