CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Both a Clayton County police officer and a shooting suspect were shot during a SWAT standoff in Jonesboro Tuesday night. The officer is stable and the suspect is in critical condition.
Police responded to a report of a person shot in the 300 block of Arrowhead Boulevard in Jonesboro.
Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound at that address. The victim was taken to the hospital. His condition was not released.

Officers were able to gather information about the suspect, then track him to a home in the 700 block of Summerchase Drive in Jonesboro. Police say the suspect refused to leave that home and the Clayton County SWAT Unit responded to the address.
According to police, efforts by negotiators to communicate with the man failed and SWAT officers entered the home.

During that operation, the suspect and SWAT officers exchanged shots. One of the officers was shot in the leg and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.
The suspect was also hit by multiple gunshots and was taken to the hospital. The officer is expected to recover and the suspect was critically wounded.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
Police said charges will be filed against the suspect relating to both the Arrowhead Boulevard and Summerchase Drive incidents. The investigation remains active.
