Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport struggled Monday to recover from a major disruption in air travel that began a day ago, with hundreds of additional flights delayed.

There have been nearly 650 delays as of Monday evening for incoming and outbound flights. There were six flights canceled as well, according to Flight Aware, which tracks delays and cancellations across the country.

Sunday, the FAA ordered two ground stops that caused hundreds flight delays due to runaway equipment issues and control tower equipment issues. No specific details were given about the problems.

“Evidently, they were delaying impound flights that were causing a domino effect across the board where they reached a saturation point that they just had to stop all traffic,” said Paul Heron, a former FAA inspector.

Heron told Channel 2’s Tom Regan that people should expect more air travel delays until the nation’s air traffic control system is overhauled and upgraded.

“The air traffic control system in Atlanta and nationwide, particularly manifesting itself in Newark this past week is just grossly archaic, not to mention the staff shortage with ATC personnel, is well behind the curve of what we should expect and hope for,” he said.

The FAA’s website showed throughout the day that there was potential for more delays or another ground stop. For real-time flight delay information, click here.
