Suspect in multi-county chase, shootout with deputies appears in court

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A suspect in the chase that stretched across Fayette and Clayton counties and ended after a shootout with deputies appeared before a judge Tuesday.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones said Maiya Gulley claimed in the courtroom that she did not shoot at anyone but apologized to the deputies involved. Clayton County Magistrate Court Judge Latrevia Kates-Johnson replied that dashcam video captured Gulley firing multiple shots toward law enforcement officials.

She faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a public safety officer and discharging a firearm near a highway. The unnamed suspect was shot during the ordeal and is recovering in Grady Hospital.

Fayette County deputies said the Jeep was driven recklessly at speeds of more than 100 mph as they pursued it. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said no officials were hurt in the incident.

The GBI, which is leading the multi-county investigation, said members of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office found a black Jeep believed to have been stolen around 7 p.m. Monday. They attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver sped off and made their way to Clayton County.

A passenger in the Jeep fired a weapon at deputies involved in the chase. The Jeep hit several other vehicles along Tara Boulevard before coming to a stop.

Officials said they took the driver into custody following his attempt to run away. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, the GBI said.
