MARIETTA, Ga. — A boil water advisory is in effect due to a water main break for affected locales in Marietta, officials tell Channel 2 Action News.
Marietta Water says they are issuing a boil water advisory due to a water main break on Lawrence Street near Covington Avenue. Officials say the break caused portions of the water system to drop to ‘dangerously low levels.’

When the levels decrease, a potential health hazard could arise where there are areas of low pressure from a backflow of water of unknown quality into the distribution system, according to Marietta Water officials.
Officials say to protect the public from a potential health hazard, customers in the affected area or those nearby that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, or preparing food.

Here’s how you properly boil water:
- Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container
- Continue heating the water for ONE minute once it begins to boil
- Remove the water from the heat source and allow to cool before use
While under a boil water advisory, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggest to only use the boil water for the following:
- Drinking
- Brushing teeth
- Washing food and preparing food and baby formula
- Making ice
- Drinking water for pets
Officials say the advisory is in effect until Marietta Water has completed the appropriate testing to be confident that there is no longer a public health concern. Customers will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted.
