Groups tour historic theatres across north Georgia

MARIETTA, Ga. — On Saturday, history and movie buffs had a chance to tour some of Georgia’s oldest theatres.

Several theatres were on the list, including the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta.

The historic theatres expedition was put on by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Fox Theatre’s community initiative, Fox Gives.

“Historic theatres are so important to downtowns to begin with. They’re anchors for the community,” Leigh Burns, the Director of Community Partnerships at the Fox Theatre said. “But they also contained lots of shared memories of generations. People go there as children and they grow up going there and they go experience it. But also the types of architecture. You know, they’re very distinctive in our state.”

The tour also took visitors to the Gem Theatre in Calhoun, the Desoto Theatre in Rome, and the Canton Theatre.
