COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County police have charged a man after his mother was found dead during a welfare check.
Police responded to a home on Evian Way around 10:30 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, officers found Melanie Sarris, 67, dead inside the home.

Detectives announced on Tuesday that they arrested Daniel Sarris, who was the victim’s son. He faces murder and aggravated assault charges. Georg
Police have not released Melanie Sarris’ cause of death.
Neighbors say Melanie Sarris was a beloved, retired Cobb County teacher.
Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell learned that this is not the first time Daniel Sarris has been charged with attacking one of his parents.

Nearly one year ago, he was charged with battery against his then-69-year-old father. The warrant from that incident says his family was concerned he was dealing with mental issues.
Neighbors told Newell on Tuesday that similar issues were happening involving Daniel Sarris’ mental health.
“I heard about the mental situation going on and that he was recently released from some form of mental institution,” neighbor Jeffrey Hawkins said. “It’s saddening that he came back and was released back into society and all of a sudden now this happens.”
The Cobb County School District released a statement on Tuesday that read,
“We join the Cobb community in grieving the tragic passing of one of our dedicated retired Cobb educators and send our deepest sympathies to all those who knew her.”
