Town Center at Cobb ownership group also behind on water bill

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — First, it was a highly delinquent electric bill that left Town Center at Cobb in the dark for 24 hours.

Now, Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell has learned Kohan Retail Investment Group is behind on the water bill. The owner also owes more than $1 million in back taxes in other parts of the country.

“They were not paying property taxes; they would pay it late to avoid tax sales,” said Jarett Heil.

Heil is the vice chair of the Marshall County Iowa Board of Supervisors. He sent Newell videos of the Marshall Town Mall that has stood in the dark.

“The big problem really came to head back in November of 2023, that is when they were not paying their electric bill and the utility company shut the power off and the power is still off in the mall to this day,” Heil said.

Earlier this week, Channel 2 Action News reported Town Center at Cobb shut down on Tuesday for not paying the power bill. Georgia Power said it was working with Town Center for several months to resolve their “highly delinquent” bills.

Newell also learned about the issue with the water bill. Cobb County has temporarily suspended water shutoffs, so the owner hasn’t received a shutoff notice for Town Center.

Channel 2 Action News found similar problems at a mall in Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio owned by Kohan.

Newell reached the owner over the phone, but he did not want his voice recorded.

“I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on. Why are there so many problems at these properties?” Newell asked.

Kohan claims he is current on the water bill and he is appealing the tax liens on the property. He claims to not know why the electric bill got so high.

He blames a business owner for the utility problem at a mall in Michigan and that tenants moved out of the mall in Iowa before the power was shut off.
