COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An arctic blast is headed our way that could affect our pipes, our pets, and our plants.
Channel 2′s Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell spoke with a plumbing company about the best ways to prepare your home for plummeting temperatures.
“The wind is really one of the biggest factors for freeze breaks,” David Cunningham, service manager with Superior Plumbing said.

One way to keep your pipes from freezing is to let water trickle from the faucet.
“We want to get the water running here just a bit,” Cunningham said. “The key piece is making sure you get it on the hot and the cold. You want water moving through both of those set of pipes.”
You can also open the cabinets below your sink to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
“Shut off the valves that go to your exterior hose bibs. That will isolate those lines and if there are freeze breaks in those lines you won’t have a continuous leak,” he said.
And if you have a garage...
“They should not leave their garage doors open. You’ll have water lines running sometimes in those walls,” he said.
If you’re worried about your sprinkler lines, Cunningham has some advice.
“Making sure that the valve near the meter is turned off. That would be a good way to create no water going into the system therefore that way if it does break you won’t waste a bunch of water,” he said.
You can also hire a professional to winterize your sprinkler system.
