Wisconsin school shooting: Teacher killed graduated from Harrison High, Kennesaw State

MADISON, Wisc. — Officials and family members have identified a teacher and student who were killed in a shooting at a private Christian school in Wisconsin.

One of the victims had ties to metro Atlanta.

The shooting happened Monday at Abundant Life Christian in Madison. Police say Natalie Rupnow, a 15-year-old student, brought a gun to the school and shot four people before she shot and killed herself.

The Dane County medical examiner identified the teacher who died as 42-year-old Erin West. An obituary identified the student as 14-year-old Rubi Patricia Vergara. Two other students remain in critical condition.

Channel 2′s Courtney Francisco learned that West is from metro Atlanta. West graduated from Harrison High School and earned her degree in early childhood education from Kennesaw State in 2005.

“Our hearts hurt following the tragic loss of Harrison graduate Erin West, whose passing has shaken our community and beyond. We will keep her family, friends, and entire school community in our thoughts as they navigate this heartbreaking time,” Cobb County School District said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Erin West, a KSU alumna whose life was taken far too soon in an act of senseless violence. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who are mourning this unimaginable tragedy,” a Kennesaw State University spokesperson said.
