Around 8:53 p.m., a trooper said he spotted the driver going 96 mph in a 70 mph and pulled the driver over on the northbound exit ramp at Spout Springs Road.
The trooper said as he got out of his patrol car, the driver shot himself. The trooper said he tried to get into the car to help the driver, but couldn’t get into the Jeep.
Other troopers arrived and broke the rear driver-side window to get into it. The driver was already dead from his injuries, according to GSP.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now in charge. They have not released the driver’s name.
The exit ramp initially closed after 9 p.m. and reopened around 2 a.m.
