Families worried about loved ones inside Fulton County Jail amid freezing temperatures

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Low water pressure and little heat. Those are the problems inmates at the Fulton County jail have had to deal with this week.

It took several days for the jail to fix broken pipes after the deep freeze.

Franchette Stanley told Channel 2′s Ashli Lincoln stressed is how she felt, knowing her 18-year-old brother was incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail when freezing temperatures caused disruption.

“We’re trying to do everything we can to help them,” said Stanley.

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat says freezing weekend temperatures caused a water line to break; along with dealing with more than 15 internal pipe leaks in the jail.

“Not having water to bathe, for numerous of days,” Stanley said.

Labat says during the week, city crews worked to restore water pressure. He says they also dealt with issues with the jail’s HVAC system. The temperature for some units dropped below 60 degrees. Sheriff’s deputies provided inmates in those units with extra blankets.

As of Thursday, the City of Atlanta has repaired 48 water lines, that broke due to freezing temperatures.

Labat says water pressure at the jail has been fully restored.
