Hapeville Police Chief Bruce Hedley told Channel 2′s Tom Regan that the shooting was over a coat. He called the killing senseless.

“This was not a random crime,” Hedley said. “This was a personal argument, so it wasn’t a stranger to stranger crime.”

It happened around 8:35 a.m. in the 900 block of Central Avenue. Two 911 calls came in, one from a witness and one from a security guard.

Responding officers found a 36-year-old man who had been shot once and died at the scene. The victim has not been identified.

The suspect was described as a Black, slim man with a goatee wearing an olive-green long coat and a gray toboggan with a ball on top.

Officials said the victim, the suspect and a woman were living together in a vacant apartment. Hedley warned the suspect may be dangerous but said he was likely going to stay off the streets.

“From my experience, he’s hiding low,” he said. “He doesn’t want to be arrested.”
