Georgia Tech, ACC to honor football players killed in University of Virginia campus shooting

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Days after a shooting left three Virginia football players dead, Georgia Tech and the Atlantic Coast Conference will honor the players with helmet stickers and a moment of silence on Saturday.

Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis and D’Sean Perry died late Sunday in a shooting on the UVA campus in Charlottesville. Another football player and student were injured.

Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key sent well wishes to Virginia and its head coach Tony Elliott as they reckon with the tragedy.

In their game against North Carolina on Saturday, the Yellow Jackets will wear helmet stickers and observe a moment of silence to remember Chandler, Davis and Perry.

“The football team wants to send out our condolences to the University of Virginia, coach Elliot, the entire team, school, athletic association and everyone involved in a situation that you can’t really put into words,” Key said.

Officials said Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former UVA football player, opened fire Sunday on a bus that had just returned from a school field trip to watch a play in Washington, D.C.

Authorities took Jones into custody on Monday. Jones faces a series of charges, including three counts of second-degree murder.

On Wednesday, Virginia canceled their home game against Coastal Carolina and will instead hold a memorial service for the three football players on Saturday.
