SAVANNAH, Ga. — The City of Savannah is initiating a pilot program that will limit the city’s iconic haunted ghost tours for the next few months.

Earlier this month, the city council adopted a program that will ban walking tours in some areas after 10 p.m. while allowing some parts of the city to continue the tours until 1 a.m.

Officials said they’re starting the pilot program on Feb. 1 and runs for 90 days because it includes February as a slower visitor travel month, as well as March and April, which are two of the busiest months for tourists to visit Savannah.

The city has 62 registered walking tour companies and, between them, there are as many as 45 tours offered after 10 p.m. and there is no official time when they have to be finished.

However, late-night tours are not allowed to use microphones, block sidewalks or go on private property.

Those caught running tours in restricted areas during restricted times can face fines from $100 to $1,000.

City leaders hope the curfews will provide a better balance for tourism and quality of life for Savannah residents.
