How could Georgia’s runoff election affect the balance of power in the U.S. Senate?

ATLANTA — Georgia’s U.S. Senate runoff between Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker could have major impacts on the balance of power in Washington, D.C.

The outcome of Tuesday’s runoff will determine if there are 50 or 51 Democratic senators.

Channel 2′s Blair Miller says if Sen. Warnock wins reelection and the Democrats keep the seat, it will impact committees in the Senate and who has the majority on those committees. This would make it easier for Democrats to fill judicial seats.

Because the Senate currently sits at a 50-50 tie between Democrats and Republicans, Vice President Kamala Harris, who also serves as president of the Senate, is required to break the tie. If Warnock keeps his seat and gets a 51st Democrat, the Vice President may not be needed as much.

If Herschel Walker wins, the Republicans will not gain control of the Senate, but will keep the current 50-50 tie.

Miller also learned from the latest federal disclosures that Warnock’s campaign has spent about $170 million, which far outpaces the $60 million spent by Walker’s campaign.

Both political parties, along with their action committees have spent even more money.
