MLK Day, Inauguration Day, College Football Playoff

ATLANTA — From MLK Day and a national championship in Atlanta to Inauguration Day in Washington D.C, Channel 2 Action News will have you covered on this busy Monday.

Here’s what to know for each event.

MLK DAY

The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is celebrated on the third Monday of January each year, close to his birthday on Jan. 15.

It’s not just a day off from work or school, but it’s also a Day of Service. King’s birthday became a national holiday in 1983. A decade later, Congress designated the federal holiday as a national day of service. It is the only federal holiday with such a designation.

There are several Day of Service events throughout metro Atlanta on Monday. The King family will also hold its annual service at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community Commemorative Service will begin at 10 a.m. Rev. William J. Barber II will deliver the keynote address this year.

INAUGURATION DAY

President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in Monday morning as the 47th president of the United States.

The dangerously cold weather in Washington, D.C. has forced the inaugural ceremonies to move inside the U.S. Capitol. Trump said that there will be a viewing event inside the Capital One Arena for those who are traveling to Washington, D.C.

The last time an inside ceremony was held for inauguration was back in 1985 for then-President Ronald Reagan’s swearing-in for his second term.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Atlanta becomes the first city to host the national championship game twice in the playoff era when Ohio State and Notre Dame face off on Monday night.

The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and it’ll be a hard ticket to come by. Tickets on the secondary market start at $1,700 as of Monday morning.

While no team from Georgia will be represented, there are players for both the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish who played high school football here in Georgia. They’ll compete for the coveted College Football Playoff trophy
