NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Officials are continuing to investigate after a Newton County man released from jail was found dead days later.

On Jan. 27, Newton County deputies responded to a suspicious call on Alcovy Road. Deputies spoke to a contractor for Georgia Power who said he and his colleagues began working on power lines around 4 p.m.
The workers told their boss that they could see a body in the ditch from the top of the hill. The workers then called their supervisor who then called the police.

Deputies confirmed the man in the ditch was Anthony Crast. According to a police report, Crast was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats on June 5, 2024.
Crast was released from the Newton County Jail on January 16, 2025.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that it is still an active investigation.
Crast’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.
