GBI identifies 23-year-old suspect accused of shooting, killing Roswell officer

ROSWELL, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the suspect accused of shooting and killing a Roswell police officer on Friday night.

Roswell Police Chief Jim Conroy said an officer, whose identity has not been released, responded to reports of a suspicious person at a shopping center along Market Boulevard.

The GBI has identified that man as 23-year-old Edward Espinoza.

Conroy says as soon as the officer approached Espinoza, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer multiple times.

The officer was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Espinoza was quickly arrested and is now being held in the Fulton County Jail.

According to jail records, he is charged with murder, aggravated assault against law enforcement and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

“One of our officers was shot and killed while serving the citizens of Roswell,” Conroy said.

Neighbors say the area is generally very busy on Friday nights with ACE Pickleball Club and a trampoline park in the area.

Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement, saying:

“Tonight, Marty, the girls, and I are praying for the loved ones of a Roswell Police Officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty. We join them, his fellow Roswell PD, and all law enforcement in mourning this sudden and heartbreaking loss, and we ask all Georgians to join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. We also ask that we remain mindful of the heavy sacrifices law enforcement and their families make to keep all of us safe each and every day. May this courageous man’s memory inspire all of us in the days, weeks, and years ahead.”
