‘It’s too dangerous’: Neighbors oppose targeted deer hunting near their homes

ROSWELL, Ga. — Some people who live in a Roswell subdivision fear someone could get hurt by contracted hunters shooting deer with arrows in their neighborhood.

“There’s runners, hikers and walkers, just a lot of activity on that sidewalk. They set up on the hill to shoot towards the road. It’s too dangerous,” said neighbor Chuck Phares.

The owner of Urban Deer Management says the HOA of a nearby subdivision permitted his hunters to manage the thriving deer population, which destroys floral and bush landscaping while increasing the risk of vehicle crashes. He also says they have permission from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division and the City of Roswell to conduct the targeted deer hunting, and they take every measure to keep the public safe.

But some homeowners in the subdivision off Eves Road still worry about the potential for accidents.

“There was a deer shot. There was blood all over the sidewalk. The deer was lying six feet from the sidewalk. We just happened to walk down that street a couple of minutes after that happened, and the deer was taking its last breath. It’s not always guaranteed you will hit the animal. Nobody’s 100%,” said Natasha Griffith.

Neighbors who oppose hunting say they will continue to appeal to the hunters to move to an area away from homes.

“We’ve tried to get their homeowner’s association involved. We talked (to) some residents. Some agree with it, some don’t. Yes, they’re legally allowed to be there, but it’s not smart to be there, because you run the risk of shooting someone or a pet,” said Phare.

Urban Deer Management says they don’t charge most subdivisions for their service and donate hundreds of pounds of venison to food charities each year.
