ROSWELL, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned that a police officer was shot and killed Friday night at a shopping center in Roswell.
During a somber news conference, Roswell Police Chief Jim Conroy held back tears as he gave the details of what happened.
Conroy said Roswell police were called out to the shopping center along Market Boulevard for a suspicious person.
He said as soon as the officer made contact with the suspect, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer multiple times.
The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.
The shooter was quickly taken into custody. Police have not released the names of the officer killed or the shooter.
“One of our officers was shot and killed while serving the citizens of Roswell,” Conroy said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in and has taken over the investigation into the shooting of the officer.
Neighbors in the area told Channel 2’s Eryn Rogers that they are on edge following the shooting.
They said Friday nights are usually really busy at the shopping plaza with a pickleball club and a trampoline park in the shopping center.
There are also several homes right behind the center.
“Bullets have no names so it’s concerning to know we had gunfire right here right outside our neighborhood bullets could go straight through and there’s houses on the other side,” neighbor Rodney McDowell said.
Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement, saying:
“Tonight, Marty, the girls, and I are praying for the loved ones of a Roswell Police Officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty. We join them, his fellow Roswell PD, and all law enforcement in mourning this sudden and heartbreaking loss, and we ask all Georgians to join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. We also ask that we remain mindful of the heavy sacrifices law enforcement and their families make to keep all of us safe each and every day. May this courageous man’s memory inspire all of us in the days, weeks, and years ahead.”
