WASHINGTON, D.C. — The nation is mourning the loss of former President Jimmy Carter. He passed away at his home in Plains, Ga. on Sunday afternoon. He was 100.
The Carter Center confirmed on Monday that the former president will lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
They say Congress extended the invitation to the Carter family, which was “respectfully and gratefully accepted.”
“This will allow an opportunity for the American people to pay their respects to President Carter,” the Carter Center wrote in a statement.
The exact timing of when he will lie in state has not been announced.

What does it mean to lie in state?
Lying in state is an honor typically associated with politicians and national servants who have passed away, but the U.S. Congress may approve any person who has served their country for the honor.
When someone lies in state, their casket is, typically, placed in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol where a ceremony will occur and the American public is allowed to pay their respects.
Other areas, like National Statuary Hall, the Old Supreme Court Chamber, the entrance to the House Chamber and the East Central Front Portico, have been used for those who have lain in state or honor.
