Flash flood warnings issued; Ground stop at Atlanta airport expires

A flash flood warning is in effect for some metro Atlanta areas tonight amid severe weather.

LIVE UPDATES:

• 7:10 p.m.: The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a ground stop until 8 p.m. due to weather for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
• 6:45 p.m.: A tree is down in southwest Atlanta. No significant injuries were reported, according to APD.
• 6:15 p.m.: The Coweta-Fayette EMC reports about 1,700 members are without power as of 6:15 p.m. Crews are working to restore power.
• 4:59 p.m.: A flash flood warning was issued for Coweta, Fayette, and Fulton County until 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The area has received nearly 5 inches of rain this afternoon from slow moving storms, Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

A severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service for Rabun County expired at 5:30 p.m.

Though the possibility remains that a stray shower or storm may pop up, storms are expected to dry up overnight.

The weather is expected to stay dry as daybreak approaches Wednesday.

The day will start dry but, in some places, it won’t stay that way as the temperatures rise.

Isolated storms could pop up in the afternoon, bringing with them heavy rains, gusty winds and cloud-to-ground lightning. Most areas will stay dry, with rain chances at 30%.

Evening hours on Wednesday likely will include a few isolated showers.

Morning lows on Wednesday will drop to the low- and mid-70s. The expected low in Atlanta, 76, is four degrees above average for this time of year.

Highs tomorrow will reach the low- to mid-90s, 94 in Atlanta.

Looking to the week ahead, the rain chances lowers to 20% Thursday and Friday. But it’ll get even hotter, mid-90s for the rest of the week.
