Corroded pipes cause sinkholes to overtake south Fulton County couple’s yard for over a year

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Sinkholes are taking over a yard in south Fulton County, all because of some corroded pipes underneath the property on Bill Cook Road.

The city was supposed to fix it over a year ago. Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes has been trying to get answers for the homeowners since then.

Wilmer and Myra Minnifield have owned the property for 35 years. They say the sinkholes are dangerous.

Photos show that the yard looks like a lake when it rains.

“Every time it rains, it washes a little bit of our property. When it rains real hard, we get a lake, and during the summer we get mosquitoes,” said Wilmer Minnifield.

The couple says they can’t even enjoy their property.

“I love to ride my bike in my yard. I was riding my bike recently, and as I rode by in the middle there, and I saw the depth of how that hole has eroded just within the last six months, it really really scared me,” Myra Minnifield described.

Fernandes called city officials over a year ago about the issues, and they came out to see what the problem was.

“They told me they had ran a camera down there and they know what the problem is. They said they were going to investigate on how to fix it. Never heard from them again,” says Wilmer.

Fernandes called them again Thursday.

They said when the issue was first raised, the public works department was dealing with an outside provider. They’re not anymore, and the city is now working diligently to figure out how to fix this.

“The ideal solution is for the pipes to be repaired and the sinkholes to be addressed, the dirt filled and sustained. We want continued success over a period of time, with the city monitoring this after they take action,” said Myra Minnifield.
