Ossoff makes inquiry to VA because so many veterans have called his office over USPS delays

ATLANTA — Georgia U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff says the US Postal Service is still not delivering mail on time and now it’s affecting veterans’ benefits.

Ossoff confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that he has made an inquiry to the VA because so many veterans are calling his office.

Since the spring, the mail situation at the sorting facility in Palmetto has been better, delivering mail at around 50% on time. That number is still unacceptable to folks using USPS and to Ossoff as well.

“I think there’s a real accountability problem and that’s why last year, I introduced legislation to make the position of Postmaster General a Senate-confirmedcausing position,” Ossoff said.

Ossoff said he would like the federal postmaster to also have term limits so that no one will ever be able to handle Georgia’s mail epidemic with a lack of urgency.

It’s been nearly a year since USPS opened the regional distribution center in Palmetto causing a chain reaction of failure that many Georgians are still dealing with now.

“This is a debacle of the largest magnitude,” Andy Swimmer told Fernandes.

Swimmer said his daughter’s wedding invitations never made it to loved ones and he lost thousands of dollars in interest when his 401k check never made it to his P.O. box. But he’s worried about all the other people dealing with things like evictions.

“Legal filings, you know, people with court appearances, people that have notices of default and remedies that they never got. So now what do you do with all those people when the us postal service didn’t do its job for things that are legally binding as a result of whatever it was, they were supposed to process? It’s terrible,” Swimmer said.

“It impacts people’s healthcare. It impacts people’s businesses. It impacts people’s lives,” Ossoff said. “Georgians deserve high-quality postal service. They haven’t been getting it. I’m going to continue to apply maximum pressure. That pressure has garnered some results, we need to see more.”
