“Daniel was more than just a student or a young man starting to carve out his place in the world. He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a person who had so much potential to offer. He touched the lives of everyone around him with his kindness, his intelligence, and his infectious smile. His family is heartbroken by his sudden passing, and his mother and younger brother are left to navigate a world without him by their side,” family friends wrote in an online fundraiser.

They say he just graduated high school and was looking forward to his future.

Investigators later learned that the 16-year-old, Jassan Trotter, tried to steal Jones’ cell phone inside the car, leading to both teens being shot.

Trotter was later charged with Jones’ murder.
