Traffic stop uncovers attempted smuggling operation in middle GA

LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — Three people are behind bars after Georgia deputies said they uncovered evidence of a smuggling operation.

Laurens County officials said on Saturday, deputies pulled over a car for speeding.

Deputies said the suspects were trying to transport a large amount of contraband to a local prison. But the journey came to a screeching halt.

According to the sheriff’s office, the traffic stop led to a search warrant at a hotel, uncovering more evidence.

During the search deputies said they found the following:

  • 12 pounds of marijuana
  • 13 pounds of tobacco
  • 526 grams (a pound) of MDMA (ecstasy)
  • 13 oxycodone pills
  • 31 vapes
  • 16 cell phones
  • A hotspot
  • A gun
  • Variety of other contraband items

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office thanked its K9 unit, Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Corrections for their help in shutting down the operation.

“To everyone else out there: Make better life choices,” LCSO said.

The suspects’ ages and identities were not released.
