ATLANTA — As a winter storm gets closer to north Georgia, a winter storm watch that was issued Wednesday has been upgraded.
Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says north Georgia and most of metro Atlanta are now under a winter storm warning or a winter weather advisory.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Banks, Barrow, Butts Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, DeKalb, Douglas, Dawson, Elbert Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Franklin, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Greene, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Hart, Heard, Henry, Jackson, Jasper, Lumpkin, Madison, Morgan, Murray, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Putnam, Rockdale, Stephens, Spalding, Taliaferro, Towns, Union, Walton, Walker, Whitfield, White, and Wilkes counties.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Meriwether, Lamar, Pike, Troup and Upson counties.
Kramlich says all types of frozen precipitation will be likely. It will start off as snow then change over to a wintry mix for metro Atlanta and areas south of I-20. Untreated roads will be impossible to travel on beginning late Friday morning.

- Snow with occasional mixing with/changing over to sleet or freezing rain through tomorrow morning
- Gradually, more freezing rain, sleet, and rain mixes in from south to north into the afternoon
- Snowfall totals of 1-2″ will be common around I-20, with 0.1-0.25″ of ice possible
- 3-6″ of snow with locally higher amounts will be possible farther north into the north Georgia mountains
- Difficult to impossible travel Friday
- Winter mix ends early Saturday morning but much of what falls sticks around through Sunday morning
