Suspect dead in officer-involved shooting on I-85 S in west Georgia

Coweta County Sheriff’s Office reports that the suspect is dead in an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 85 Monday afternoon.

Channel 2’s Tom Jones, who was near the shooting scene in Coweta County, said traffic in the area was severely snarled.

The deadly shooting shut down I-85 southbound for hours, but it has since reopened.

Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect during a traffic stop.

Deputies stopped a driver and had the suspect get out of the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said during the stop, he ran back to his vehicle and entered the driver’s compartment. Deputies tried to tase the suspect as they tried to pull him out of the vehicle.

The suspect pulled a gun and fired multiple shots. The deputies returned fire. Emergency medical responders pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.

No deputies were hurt in the incident, the sheriff’s office said.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation says its agents are investigating. All further updates will be provided by the GBI.

Georgia Department of Transportation 511 says the closure happened at around 1:45 p.m. at about mile marker 35, past State Road 14.
