HANCOCK COUNTY, Ga. — Just as kids are starting to go back to school, one Georgia district had to cancel classes for the rest of the week over snakes on campus.
District leaders confirmed to WMGT-TV that at least two snakes were spotted outside of one of their schools and one was spotted inside the school.
Interim Superintendent Latrasha Palmer said they then took action.
“We did see snakes, two snakes on the outside of the perimeter, we did, but when I saw one was reported on the inside, I knew expeditiously I had to ensure what type of snake it was,” Palmer told the TV station. “So, once I found out that it has the potential to be poisonous, we consulted with a licensed environmentalist who’s going to come in and check all of our schools. Not one school, not two schools, but all of them.”
And snakes aren’t the only things the district will be searching for.

“We’ve had some incidents with squirrels,” Palmer told WMAZ-TV.
Parent Miranda Edwards told WRDW-TV that she had heard the rumors about the snakes.
“I saw social media with all these snakes crawling towards the school,” Edwards told the TV station. “I said, ‘Oh my God.’”
Edwards said the closure has interrupted her household.
“It started Monday, and now they’re out again for the next Monday,” Edwards said. “I had got my electric bill down the way I wanted it. And now they got to be home another week. All the lights left on in the house. Yeah, I’m ready for them to go back.”
Palmer says the district plans to return to a normal schedule on Monday, August 10, pending the results of that full inspection.
