Beacon Hill Black Alliance holds rally in metro Atlanta after video release of Tyre Nichols beating

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights held a peaceful gathering for Tyre Nichols Sunday in Decatur.

Channel 2′s Veronica Griffin spoke with those there about what the death of Nichols means.

“We can’t think that this is just routine and we should go on about our business. We have stop and bare witness that Tyre Nichols lived and his life in fact mattered,” Mawuli Davis said.

This event was one of several local and national protest held over the past few days after the Memphis Police Department released video on Friday of the deadly traffic stop involving Tyre Nichols.

Several videos show five police officers beating Nichols on January 7th.

Melanie Vaughn Colwell is the pastor at nearby Oakhurst Baptist Church, she’s one of several spiritual leaders who spoke to the crowd.

“In some way the was operating in the policemen who murdered Tyre – because it operates in all of us not matter if we are black or brown or a white person. We are swimming in this culture of white supremacy,” she said.
