City of Brookhaven orders work to place Google Fiber stopped after gas main hit by workers

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Just days after a Google Fiber crew hit a gas main near a Dekalb County elementary school, the City of Brookhaven has ordered a stop work order for the company.

On Monday, city officials confirmed that on Dec. 13, a crew installing Google Fiber in the right-of-way on Ashford Dunwoody Road struck a gas main near Montgomery Elementary School, which forced school officials to put the school on lockdown as firefighters rushed to the scene.

The following day, city officials issued a citywide stop-work order in response to safety concerns.

“The health and safety of our residents come first,” said District 1 Council Member Michael Diaz. “In particular when we are dealing with young children. As a civil engineer, I’m looking forward to hear about how Google fiber plans to address our citywide concerns.”

“We are keenly aware that a local municipality such as Brookhaven is limited in the action we can take against utilities, but in terms of Public Safety, we have to take a stand,” added District 2 Council Member Jennifer Owens.

“Google Fiber still has a lot more work to finish in Brookhaven and we have to pause and ensure better safety before we proceed any further.”
