Loved ones of pastor shot and killed believe his death was case of mistaken identity

Loved ones of a DeKalb County pastor found shot to death inside his car are begging for answers as to why someone would kill him.

Dr. Kevin D. Nick, who preached at Higher Dimensions Church International, was killed just miles away from his home and church on Friday night.

“Why did you feel the need to shoot him four times – like why?” Marica Chisolm said.

Chisolm, a long time friend of the pastor, said she doesn’t know why anyone would want to hurt him. He was a leader in the community and loved by many.

“Giving, loving, loyal, helpful, funny, anointed, loved to sing, great friend,” Chisolm said.

She was shocked when her friend called her on Friday and said someone shot Nick to death.

“Today was a very rough morning for me. Absolutely devastated that my friend, one is gone, and two has passed in such a tragic manner,” she said.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes obtained a copy of the police report. DeKalb County police said there were two Decatur shootings in the area of Sherwood Road and Covington Highway Friday, but they haven’t made a connection between them.

DeKalb County police found Nick in his car parked on the 4200 block of Sherwood Avenue around 7 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses said they saw two cars full of people surrounding the pastor’s SUV and referred to him by a different name. Police said this was after someone shot him to death.

This has led loved ones to believe this was a case of mistaken identity or the shooter knew the pastor by a different name. They are hoping someone comes forward with information.

“Please, please, please contact authorities and let them know so that his mom and his family and friends can at least know that justice will be served for him,” Chisholm said.

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy on Saturday, but have not said if he’s the shooter or not.
