Neighbor says someone ‘poured gas,’ arson investigation underway after Brookhaven townhome burns

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — An arson investigation is underway in a DeKalb County city after an overnight fired burned a townhome.

The townhome was in Brookhaven, where Channel 2′s Michael Seiden spoke to neighbors. One man said he saw video showing someone pouring gas of his neighbor’s garage before the fire.

Authorities say they’re investigating the fire.

“I wake up to someone screaming in a loudspeaker, and it turns out it was the Brookhaven police,” Jeff Loyd told Channel 2 Action News. “I had smoke in my garage.”

Loyd lives in Bramley Park, near Dresden Drive in Brookhaven.

He told Seiden that the first sign of trouble started around 2 a.m. Thursday.

“It was a lot of smoke coming out of the garage, so I didn’t know what was going on, if the house was on fire,” Loyd said.

Now, authorities say it’s an ongoing investigation, but neighbors said they saw something suspicious on home security video.

“It shows that somebody came around and got with a gas tank and then sprayed it on the base of the garage,” they said.

Fortunately for the community, the closest fire station was less than a mile away.

“DeKalb County Fire were awesome, four trucks out here. They were all, I mean, we had a lot of people here, plus the Brookhaven police, so they were great,” Loyd said. “Very quick response it could’ve been a lot worse.”

Channel 2 Action News is still working to get a copy of the video and are staying in close contact with investigators for any updates.
