Tropical system has 90% chance of developing in the Gulf

Tropical development likely today or tomorrow in the Gulf (Maxuser)

ATLANTA — While it has been a very quiet Atlantic tropical season, that doesn’t mean it’s over.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan is watching an organizing system in the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf.

Monahan says the system will continue to organize over the next several days as it moves north, likely becoming the season’s next tropical storm. The next name on the list is Isaias.

As this moisture is pulled north toward the Gulf coast, widespread rain is likely across a lot of the southeast by the weekend.

It will be moving through some very warm, deep water -- water that’s been unaffected by any tropical systems so far this year. That means the supply of fuel for a storm is significant.

Monahan says it’s too early for specifics on the exact timing and system strength until it officially forms.
